Cocktails at the Campbell Bar

Anne, Joe and Hans invited me to join them for a cocktail drink at the Campbell Bar inside the Grand Central Terminal last Sunday.  Never been to that bar before.  It turned out there was a Jazz Performance by a duo called Acute Inflections.  I sketched the gestures as they performed but missed the chance to show it to them before we left the bar.

On our way out, a young lady who worked there politely asked if I sketched the performers.  Once I showed it to her, she was surprised, asked if ok to take a picture of it.  It was fun to have that kind of a reaction for something so simple as a sketch of what I saw.

Drawing exercise

About three years ago, I took an introduction to a drawing class.  We made drawings from clipped images mostly from magazines.  I suppose the drawing exercises were all about observing the lines, shapes, tones, etc.   This one was about the eyes that captured my interest.  I’m happy how this one turned out.

Top of the Avenue

The head parking spot from the corner of Lafayette Street and Boston Post Road (Route 1) offered a nice view of this interesting building right at the top of Greenwich Avenue.  I like the architecture and corner location.

Sketch Redux

I went back to sketch the Second Congregational Church and chose the back view this time.  There's an old cemetery adjoining the ground where I had a good view of this beautiful stone church.  I didn’t mind standing there a long time because the weather was cooler.

Rye Scene

Last Spring, I parked my car on Purdy Avenue from across the Hand Rolled Bagels shop.  This was the scene before me.

Marina and Stone Church

I was looking for some ideas to sketch yesterday.  Found a nice view from the newly built locker and restroom building at the Grass Island Park.  The view I chose was a little complicated even with the thumbnail sketch.  Then I noticed the puffy clouds against the panoramic view of the Long Island Sound.  I wasn't getting it.  Time to move to other place. 

The beautiful Second Congregation Church made of stone has always been an interest.  Never noticed the unassuming driveway that exists at that busy intersection leading to the front side of the building.  There was an open parking spot under a shade and that was where I drew the church from the passenger seat side of my car. 

Still Life Study

Here's another attempt at a still life watercolor painting.  I find it interesting to do another one like the basket of tomatoes I did several weeks ago.  This time its a mix of garden produce.  When it was time to color, it was hard to get a close coloring shade for the cloves of garlic and I found the many different shapes challenging.  Watercolor and white gouache.
